I didn't read the whole book but I remember LOVING the opening of Dos Passos MANHATTAN TRANSFER. A local guy telling the main character to get better clothes: "It's looks that counts in this city." Something like that .... I think the 1920s was peak NYC.
I recently came across a tiktok account that tallies all of the drinks that worldoftshirts consumes in his videos. I didn’t even know who he was until I found this account, but now I’m completely invested in his life
This list made me tear up - I moved to NYC from the South 6 years ago for college, moved out of town for a bit, then moved back. There's a scene at the end of the most recent Tom Holland Spiderman movie, where it shows him starting over, moving into a new shoebox apartment. The NYC of Ghostbusters (1984) caught my imagination as far back as middle school... Now its NYC for life or bust. No where else makes me cry. You have to try to have it all.
Excited for you to move here! The self-mythologizing of new york is the perpetual engine that keeps this city running
What about the New York of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? Gritty, tough, lots of pizza, very questionable sanitation.
great idea for an article

I just published a novel about a 23 yr old woman who moves to NYC. There's not many good books about this. Not recently.

I love Donna Tartt but you definitely don't need to read The Goldfinch.
